IC INFORMATION

Character Name: Cassandra (Johanna von Musel Klossowski) de Rolo
Canon: The Legend of Vox Machina
Canon Point: The end of the first season.
Background: wiki link. There are a few slight changes between the stream and the animated series. Primarily that rather than freeing her brother and fleeing, the two of them were both captured and tortured and escaped together. And in the animated series they made it blatantly clear that Sylas had used vampiric mind control on her in order to get her to do things, rather than leaving it implied, but vague.

Suitability: Cassandra is incredibly intellectually curious; she’s an avid seeker of knowledge, has been since she was tiny. The library in Whitestone castle is one of her favourite places. She loves reading and learning and mapping places out. Researching. She was also the youngest daughter of the ruling family of Whitestone, so she knows politics and how to navigate it as well as history and languages. She will be… incredibly WARY when she arrives in-game, courtesy of what happened to her. She is freshly out of prolonged trauma, safe for the first time in 6 years. She will not be used again. So she will be wanting to learn about the world she’s found herself in as well as all the different factions. And she’s a rogue, so spy-y/information gathering nonsense is absolutely right up her alley.

As well as discovering ruins and mapping places out. That’s one of the first things she will be doing after arriving. Mapping everything out. If she can get parchment/paper and ink she will be making physical maps on top of just the mental map. (Keeping herself busy so she can’t THINK and to try and keep the memories and nightmares at bay.)

She very much wants to help people, too. So looking into cures and delving into natural healing, herbs and things (she's had a great deal of practice at tending injuries mostly her own, or lending a hand is absolutely something she would do as well.

Powers: In Critical Role proper Cassandra has no magical or supernatural abilities that we see. The only thing we see is her fighting ability, so she’s had considerable training in using swords/daggers/etc. And wearing armour. (She’s a rogue, so she has all the skills that come with it; stealth, lock-picking, evasion, etc. Her mother made sure she was quite skilled in all of them). She grew up learning politics and history and languages and all the things needed to rule a city. And she’s immensely skilled in it all. She’s also noble-born, so she’s very well educated. It runs in her family. Only more so, because she is an avid seeker of knowledge.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them. It’s a series of events, honestly, all interconnected. The murder of her family. Being captured and tortured alongside her only surviving brother, Percy. Escaping and fleeing the castle that had once been their home. Being shot in the back multiple times by arrows and nearly dying, while her brother fled and abandoned her. Being dragged back to the Briarwoods, where she was tortured, fed on (Sylas Briarwood was a vampire), mind controlled, and further traumatized for at least 6 years. Including seeing the bodies of her family hung from the Sun Tree.

She spent a large number of her formative years captive. Mind controlled, used, forced to do things she would never have chosen to do if she had fully had her own will. She doesn’t know who she is, not really. Not anymore. She had no chance to truly mourn the loss of her family, or heal from the torture she suffered alongside her brother, because she was thrust into a prolonged survival situation where she was tortured further, mind controlled and fed on by a vampire. None of which she’d had any time to deal with. Let alone the guilt of what she’d done while under the Briarwoods’ control.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by? Yes. It got lost for a little while, forced out of her by vampiric mind control, but she is very much the sort of young woman to protect and care for others. She does what she feels is the right thing, whether or not it’s the lawful thing. (Chaotic Good, as far as D&D/pathfinder alignments go.)

What quality or qualities do they admire most? Loyalty, caring, gentle hearts. Kindness. Goodness, the real kind. (Goes along with gentle hearts and kindness.) She’s seen the worst in people, gone through the worst. She very much appreciates genuinely good people. And people who are better than they think they are. Like her. Although she can see the goodness in others that she can’t see in herself.)

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike? oh god yes. Cassandra dislikes most of herself after what happened with the Briarwoods. What she was forced to do. It doesn’t matter that she was still a child who went through untold depths of trauma and never had a chance to truly heal from any of it, or that she was actually, literally mind controlled by a vampire. She doesn’t know if she can ever forgive herself. Passionate self-loathing. She wishes that she had been stronger. Better.

What is their sign, and why? I went with Strength for her. It was a tough choice, between The High Priestess and Strength, because both are so perfect for her. But I went with Strength in part because she is. She SURVIVED. She survived the slaughter of her family, survived torture, vampiric mind control, and she survived being the Briarwood’s captive for six years. All that they put her through. She’s stronger than she knows. (And she’s better than she thinks she is.) As her brother Percy said, “They will see you as a survivor. Everyone here suffered from the Briarwoods. But you endured it.”

SAMPLES & ARRIVAL

Samples: TDM threads

Arrival Scenario: Cadens Desert Outpost 003
Cassandra de Rolo has had a VERY. TRAUMATIC. LIFE. Her early childhood was happy; she was the youngest of seven children, born to the noble family that ruled the city of Whitestone. And life was good

But then, little over 6 years ago from her canon point, a Lord and Lady Briarwood came to court. They were invited in as guests... and then viciously attacked the family and their household. Her parents, and all her siblings save one, were murdered. Cassandra and her brother, Percy, were captured and tortured for an unknown period of time, before they finally managed to escape and flee the castle.

But as they fled she took several arrows to the back, and fell. Terrified, and thinking her dead, Percy left her behind.

She wasn’t, however. She was found as she lay bleeding out in the snow by some hunters from Whitestone, who recognized her. They began to nurse her back to health, when associates of the Briarwoods found them. They slaughtered the hunters and dragged Cassandra back to the castle. The Briarwoods hung her family’s bodies from the Sun Tree, the large tree that stands in the centre of Whitestone, as warning. And to hurt Cassandra. For years she tried to escape them, and was punished for it every time. Under their thumb, forced to live as a member of their family. The de Rolos were well loved by their people, and they thought to use her. And use her they did. Eventually, after all she went through, after years of trauma and punishment and the Briarwoods emotional and mental abuse and magic (and because it was a matter of survival)... she aided them. Her job was to keep in contact with anyone who might attempt to rise against the Briarwoods, and inform them. To prevent any surprises. And she did.

Until Vox Machina came. Until her brother came. And still she worked with the Briarwoods. Taking them down to the ziggurat below Whitestone and luring them into a trap, nearly getting them all killed. “I have a new family. I am a Briarwood. And I have a destiny with the Whispered One.” But Vox Machina survived, pursuing Cassandra and the Briarwoods into the ziggurat proper and interrupting the ritual. And Cassandra fought them, but the guilt and battle within her were plainly evident. Battling the trauma, and vampiric mind control, and finding her way back to herself. In the end Lady Briarwood flees to begin the ritual, Lord Briarwood is dead, and Cassandra is captured.

In the lull between battles, Percy woke her up, and after a conversation, and a battle with Percy’s quite literal inner demon, Lady Briarwood escaped her bonds only to be recaptured in the middle of running. And it was Cassandra who dealt the killing blow, getting justice, getting revenge for all the Briarwoods had done to her and her family and the people of Whitestone. After which she dragged Lady Briarwood’s dead body to the acid pit to make sure there would be no way for her to return (which, didn’t quite work, but that’s for another canon point).
